Commodity price information and analysis for the month of January 2018, across Ghanaian markets.
COUNTRY WIDE ANALYSIS
Prices of commodities surged in the first month of the year 2018. Most increases were above 5 percentage points. Tomato made the highest gain of 34.57 percent to close at GHS 344.50 per crate with cassava also gaining 12.17 percent to close at GHS 76.83. Pona and maize made gains of 9.94% and 9.81% to close the month at GHS 442.33 and 131.14 respectively. Local rice also gained 8.43% to close at GHS 308.86 with wheat gaining 7.56% to close at GHS 237.17. Cowpea made a gain of 5.27 percent to close at GHS 350.00 per bag with groundnut gaining 4.63 percent to close at GHS 365.14. Millet gained 2.40 percent to close at GHS 231.29. Two commodities however dropped in prices. Gari lost 6.95% to close at 195.14 with Soya also losing less than a percentage point to close at GHS 224.43.
CROP ANALYSIS
Maize
A bag of maize gained 9.81 percent to close at GHS 131.14. The highest price of GHS 177.00 was recorded at Takoradi and the lowest price of GHS 103.00 recorded at Tamale.
Rice Local
The average price for a bag of local rice gained 8.43 percent to close at GHS 308.86. The highest price of GHS 443 per bag was recorded at Accra with the lowest price of GHS 260.00 recorded at Takoradi.
Tomato
The average price of a crate of tomatoes gained 34.57 percent to close the month at GHS 344.50. The highest price of GHS 522.00 was recorded at Takoradi with Dambai recording the lowest price of GHS 195.00.
